Chapter 7

Callie drove them through town to the resort.

Christmas decorations lit up Main Street, candy canes and Christmas trees made of tinsel attached to the streetlights sparkled in the sparse sun. At night, twinkle lights wrapped around the poles lit the way, making the street seem to have come out of a Norman Rockwell painting. But now, early afternoon, some braved the weather to take a quick walk down the sidewalk, poking their heads into the stores. The Rocky Point Supply Company had its share of visitors, and despite the lunch hour having come and gone, the diner looked crowded.

The talk with Mitch’s mother drained her. She could use a nap, or a soak in the hot tub in the pool area, or, if she were being responsible, a two-hour workout.

Mitch stared out the window, and Callie would’ve thought he was mad at her, except he held her hand, their fingers twisted together, and she drove with one hand on the wheel.

They were moving too fast, and it made him uncomfortable. She couldn’t blame him, not with the stories he’d told her about the other women. To find someone who accepted all of him, and she did, more than anything in the world, well, she’d give him time to sort it out.

His mother knew him better than anyone, and if she thought Mitch was already in love with her, she could afford to wait.

“I think I’ll nap when we get back. I know we’ve been spending a lot of time together, and it must have messed up your schedule a little. Don’t feel like you have to entertain me if you don’t have the time for it. Marnie said I didn’t have to be here for the full two weeks, but I took the time since I needed the break. That’s all.”

“The future makes me nervous.”

Callie squeezed his hand. “I know. Me, too.”

“I would like to talk to Autumn, if she still wants me to.”

Callie turned her car onto the resort road and began the slow climb up the hill. “Your parents don’t think that’s a good idea. After what your mom told me, I don’t know. I want it to be good for you, but it’s only a little blog post and I’m torn. Will it be okay because it’s a little blog post? Or will it cause so much grief that the little blog post will turn into a big mistake? Autumn says it will help. I agreed with her, but now I’m beginning to think she’s the only one who thinks so.”

“If she can answer me this, I’ll do it. I don’t want to be the only resort employee she interviews. If she’ll interview Ivy, and Desiree, and a few others who work at the resort, then it won’t seem like she singled me out.”

“That’s a good idea. But I think she did, you know. Single you out. Because I started asking questions. Because she thinks we’re together.” She liked the sound of it, the together part.

Mitch didn’t say anything, and she didn’t push.
